Webinar: The Copernicus programme and its benefits for Mexico and Central America

The first webinar organised under the auspices of the EU Global Action on Space was held on November 25 and was dedicated to the benefits of the Copernicus programme for the Mexico, Central America and Caribbean region.

Earth Observation experts and European Commission officials illustrated potential uses of the free and open data and products of the Copernicus Land, Marine, Climate Change and Emergency Management Services in the region. Speakers showcased how the Copernicus programme helps monitor land and oceans, better understand and respond to climate change, and provides vital information to support public authorities manage and respond to natural disasters and emergencies that might affect the region.

Other topics explored included the role of Earth Observation and satellite data for fostering economic growth and employment. As well as the role of Earth Observation data in supporting the implementation of policies such as on food security, agriculture and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Additionally, participants learned about existing regional initiatives that can support users in the uptake of Copernicus data, such as the Copernicus Academy and Relays networks and the Copernicus Central America initiative.

85 attendees heard speakers who shared insights into the concrete applications of the Copernicus services to support local businesses and public authorities. Participants were highly engaged, asking many questions of the speakers and showing interest in the topics and the webinar strengthened the bonds between the EU and Central American Earth Observation communities.
