EU Global Action on Space launches "Down to Space" podcast series
The EU Global Action on Space, an initiative of the European Commission to promote the EU Space programme worldwide, is launching a new podcast series fostering exchanges between leading experts from across the world.
Down to Space: Connecting #EUSpace Globally is meant to be a beacon for dialogue on international collaboration in space, via the use of EU space-based data and services in a broad range of sectors.
The first episode - now available on all streaming platforms - highlights the IRIS² satellite connectivity programme, spotlighting its applications and additional benefits for Africa. IRIS² is the most recent EU Space Programme component, which adds to the existing ones on Earth observation (Copernicus), global satellite navigation (Galileo) and Satellite-Based Augmentation System (EGNOS). IRIS² will provide secure connectivity to governmental users and businesses through high-speed internet broadband.
Its role was first explored in the EU Global Action on Space event “Future EU Space Programme and satellite connectivity opportunities for Africa: added value of the IRIS² programme for local stakeholders” that took place in Dakar, Senegal on 23 October 2023.
The episode, featuring Anas Hanan, Policy Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), analyses the conclusions of the encounter and the new opportunities it will provide for African countries, building on the partnership and cooperation between Africa and the EU in space.
