Helping European start-ups to connect with Gulf stakeholders: the “EU Global Action on Space” at the LEAP Tech Conference

10 February 2023

On February 6th the European Union Space Programme was spotlighted at the biggest start-up event in the Gulf Region: Riyadh’s LEAP Tech Conference. The event showcased the potential benefits of the EU Space Programme for the region and also enabled selected European space companies to pitch their innovative ideas.

The Gulf countries are home to a bustling space ecosystem. As outlined exhaustively in the EU Global Action on Space market report, the last few years have seen the region increasingly focus on the space sector through new regional initiatives, international partnerships and massive economic investments.

As the biggest start-up event in the Gulf region, the LEAP Tech Conference 2023 represented the perfect platform to facilitate business cooperation between European and local stakeholders in the field of space. Through the EU Global Action on Space, the European Commission enables cooperation between the European space ecosystem and international stakeholders wanting to take advantage of the EU’s space capabilities and the EU Space Programme – namely Copernicus, EGNOS and Galileo - to boost their businesses.

At this event the European space industry took centre stage: the Global Action’s senior business coach outlined the benefits of applying to our coaching services, and selected businesses had the opportunity to present their space-based solutions in two pitching sessions respectively dedicated to the upstream and downstream sectors.

Our market report identified infrastructure monitoring and transportation & logistics as key sectors where growing business cooperation between European and Gulf countries’ stakeholders would bring considerable added value. The report estimated that around one trillion euros have been invested in active infrastructure projects, including roads and sustainable energy sites. With EGNOS covering Europe, and Copernicus and Galileo operational worldwide, Europe is extremely well-positioned to enable new opportunities around the world that leverage the EU Space Programme’s high performance services. Opportunities exist in other sectors too: from satellite system development, to aviation, to agriculture.

Companies interested in finding new partners and customers abroad can apply for the Global Action internationalisation support services and enjoy additional benefits, including market intelligence and insights, business coaching and tailored technical support.
